The Pittsburgh Steelers, normally one of the quietest teams in NFL free agency, suddenly are one of the busiest. The Steelers made a pair of surprise moves by re-signing safety Ryan Clark and bringing back wide receiver Antwaan Randle El on Tuesday -- a day after signing two backups who excel on special teams, safety Will Allen from the Buccaneers and wide receiver Arnaz Battle from the 49ers.

The Steelers didn't make any big splashes during the opening days of free agency, but they did work furiously to add veteran depth to the roster.Free safety Will Allen, wide receivers Arnaz Battle and Antwaan Randle El and offensive tackle Jonathan Scott were among those signed to compete for playing time. Even free safety Ryan Clark, who was allowed to become an unrestricted free agent, reportedly agreed to a new deal. For Randle El, it's a return to the franchise for which he played his first four seasons.The Steelers' other unrestricted free agents, including running back Willie Parker, cornerback Deshea Townsend, defensive ends Nick Eason and Travis Kirschke and safety Tyrone Carter were not talked to before free agency started.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is being investigated in an allegation of sexual assault at a Georgia nightclub, police said Friday. Officers said the alleged assault occurred early Friday morning at a nightclub in Milledgeville, about 135 kilometers (85 miles) southeast of Atlanta.

A judge on Monday dismissed charges of simple assault and resisting arrest against Steelers kicker Jeff Reed, who was accused of raising his fists at a Pittsburgh police officer when ordered back in his vehicle as police dealt with a teammate. The two misdemeanor charges dismissed by state District Judge Richard King at Reed's preliminary hearing were the most serious he faced.

Steelers reach deal with Hampton, franchise Reed (AP)

The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a deal with nose tackle Casey Hampton and placed the franchise tag on kicker Jeff Reed. ESPN first reported the agreement with Hampton, and Kevin Colbert, the team's director of football operations, confirmed it Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine. ESPN reported the deal was for three-years and $21 million, including $11 million guaranteed.
